When I first thought of Euljiro 4-ga, it seemed like a dull and lifeless neighborhood. However, when I visited in person, I discovered that there were far more colors than I had expected. These colors came from the essential machines used in aluminum production.

처음 을지로4가를 떠올렸을 때는 칙칙하고 생기가 없는 동네라고 생각했습니다. 하지만 직접 방문해보니 생각했던 것보다 훨씬 다양한 색이 존재한다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 이 색들은 알루미늄 생산에 필수적으로 사용되는 기계에서 비롯된 것이었습니다.






Wihin these vibrant machines, aluminum is formed, seamlessly blending with neutral tones. This, to me, is the essence of Seoul’s hip culture.

Just as Text Sandwich’s aluminum products harmonized with various colors during production, I hope they will also naturally blend into everyday objects with diverse hues, shaping a unique cultural identity. And that, I believe, is one of Text Sanwich’s greatest charms.

Euljiro, which has a modern atmosphere, is actually an area that has been around since the Joseon Dynasty. Various industrial facilities were built there during the modernization period. An area where the past and present coexist. The unique environment and the recent retro craze have brought Euljiro back into the spotlight as 'Hip-jiro'.

현대적인 분위기의 을지로는 사실 조선 시대부터 있었던 지역입니다. 근대화 시기에 다양한 산업 시설이 들어섰고요. 과거와 현재가 공존하는 지역이죠. 독특한 환경과 최근 복고 열풍이 불면서 을지로가 '힙지로'로 다시 주목받고 있습니다.




There are 10,000 shops here, with 50,000 tradespeople, many of whom have been working here since the 1950s and were integral to South Korea’s postwar economic boom, the so-called Miracle on the Han. Euljiro was called Gurigae, or Copper Road and it was different from what it is now. At that time, there was a mud hill between Euljiro 1-ga and 2-ga, that was a very dark, copper color, hence the name. As an administrative center, Euljiro had many government offices. It was also home to Hyeminseo, the official medical authority of the time which treated ordinary people, and Jejungwon, the first Western hospital, so it became known as a pharmaceutical street too. After liberation, Kogane-Cho was changed to Euljiro after General Eulji Mundeok, a general during the Goguryeo era, widely regarded as one of the greatest military heroes in Korean history.
Immediately following liberation, it was destroyed by the bombings during the Korean War. Afterwards, many architects and construction workers gathered to rebuild Seoul and the area slowly regained life. Since the 1960s, the textile and steel industries, which were the foundation of Korea's modernization, have flourished here.

일하며 전후 한국의 경제 호황, 이른바 '한강의 기적'에 핵심적인 역할을 담당했습니다. 을지로는 구리개, 즉 구리길로 불리며 지금과는 다른 모습이었어요. 당시 을지로 1가와 2가 사이에 진흙 언덕이 있었는데, 그 색이 매우 어두운 구리색이었다고 해서 붙여진 이름입니다. 행정 중심지였던 을지로에는 많은 관공서가 있었어요. 또한 일반 백성들을 치료하던 당시의 공식 의료 기관인 혜민서와 최초의 서양식 병원인 제중원이 있어 약방의 거리로도 알려지게 되었습니다. 해방 후 고가네초는 한국 역사상 가장 위대한 군사 영웅으로 평가받는 고구려 시대 장군 을지문덕 장군의 이름을 따 을지로로 바뀌었습니다.
해방 직후 한국전쟁 당시 폭격으로 파괴되었습니다. 이후 많은 건축가와 건설 노동자들이 서울을 재건하기 위해 모여들었고, 이 지역은 서서히 활기를 되찾았습니다. 1960년대 이후에는 한국 근대화의 기반이 된 섬유와 철강 산업이 이곳에서 번성했습니다.




In Euljiro 4-ga, you can find aluminum products in their most basic geometric forms. While the manufacturing process primarily relies on simple foundational shapes to maintain proper proportions and balance, creating small bolt holes requires intricate and highly detailed tools.
